I have made a quick guide to choosing or taking the perfect photo of your pet for your portrait commission. If you are still struggling to pick the right photo after reading the guide, then do not fret, you can message me and I will be happy to talk you through it and help you choose the best photo for reference. If you have already had professional photographs of your pet taken, then one of these would be ideal for a commission as they should fit all or most of the tips below. If using a professional photograph you may need to ask the photographers permission to use the photo if they own the copyright to the image. If you are using your own photo then here is a list of a few things to keep in mind when choosing or taking a photo for your commission.
Good lighting - Is the photo well lit? The ideal location to take a photo of your pet is outside on a sunny day. Inside with sufficient lighting is also another option, you are looking to have a photo that does not have a lot of shadows cast on your pet.
~
True Colours - The photo should show the true colour of your pet and also the true eye colour. Sometimes lighting can make the colour of your pet look a lot lighter or darker than they actually are, or even a different colour with reflections in eyes and on shiny fur. So try to choose or take a photo that shows a true representation of your pet. If you are set on a photo for your commission that does not show the colours correctly, then don't panic. If you let me know that the colours are incorrect, then I will request you send me additional photos that are the correct colour to use as reference for colour only.
~
Visible details - if your pet has hair or fur, then it is important that the photo shows enough detail to see the direction the hair is going.
~
Distance from the camera - Your photo should have your pet filling most of the frame. If your pet is too far away from the camera then a lot of details will not be picked up in the photo. I recommend taking your photo 1-2m away from your pet depending on the size of your pet. Neck and head close up photographs are ideal for pet portraits
~
Personality and Character - This is an important thing to consider in your reference photo. You want to make sure the photo truly captures your pet's personality. You know them best and know what makes them who they are, so try and show me in the photo that you choose of them.
~
Additional
photographs
- It is not necessary, but it can be helpful to send additional photographs for specific details. If you want to send additional reference photos then I would recommend sending a close up photo of your pet’s eyes, nose/muzzle area and a close up of their fur/hair if they have any unique markings that are perhaps not very clear in your main photograph for the
commission.
