So yesterday I did a thing. 🥰 My first ever Art workshop. I had the pleasure of being invited to teach a lesson with a lovely art group in March. I must admit I was nervous and apprehensive about doing it, but I am so glad I did. And I was so lucky to have such a wonderful group of people for my first time. My wonderful client has sent me a photo of Willow (aka Pumpkin) all framed up and on her wall. And I just think it looks beautiful. She is pride of place where she can be remembered fondly every day. It is amazing when my customers send me their portraits framed and displayed. I don’t sell my portraits with mounts or frames as I think it is something that is so individual, I don’t want to sell a generic white mount and plain frame when people want different things that will fit with their decor and style. Wow I am gobsmacked, I have been looking back at the mane hair on my first cob horse I drew back in 2021 and am shocked at the comparison to a similar cob that I drew this year. I was really proud of my horse drawing in 2021 but I think I knew in my heart that I had struggled with the coarse mane hair and wasn’t completely happy with that area of the piece. So it has been amazing to see my progression on drawing that type of hair in particular with my recent work. The 2023 mane is what the 2021 should have looked like. It proves to me that my skills are constantly developing and improving with each drawing I do. The tips, tricks and techniques I have picked up over the last couple of years have clearly helped me become a better artist. I wonder if in a couple of years time I will be looking at this years drawings and seeing improvements again. Willow. A memorial piece for my East Anglia Game and Country Fair competition winner I drew back in March. It was lovely to draw my first Rottweiler, I have an affinity for this breed in particular as my husband grew up with one and we have said if we were ever to get a dog it would be a Rottie as they are just brilliant dogs. Her owner had the most wonderful things to say about her. This is Willow in her words: “Willow (aka Pumpkin) gentle and genuine. Loyal and loving. Intelligent and eager to please. Devoted to me. Stoic, proud, elegant, beautiful, undemanding and dignified. Willow was my brightest star of whom I was most proud. She exhibited unconditional Love and total forgiveness in equal measure. She had such depth of character, intelligent and understanding. Willow had a wonderful sense of humour and incredible comic timing. She was loving, loyal, courageous, gentle, fun,cheeky, fiercely faithful, great company and my unshakeable rock for 10 wonderful years. From ugly stage to finished results. When doing any drawing there is always an ugly stage where it is just the under painting and it just doesn’t look that pretty. Although not aesthetically pleasing, this stage is so important to get right as it is where you get the tonal values in. Getting the tones correct is what really helps a piece look realistic, the shadows and highlights need to be in the right places to give the image its depth. My first 5 pet portrait, I really love this composition that my client asked for. I think it works so well with the balance between bunny, Guinea pig and cat centre framed. This was a really enjoyable piece to work on, I preferred it with the original grey background, unfortunately there was a smudge under one of them that I just couldn’t remove so we had to add over a pastel background, but I still think it works well. Lovely Lily in her wedding collar. It was nice to incorporate it into her portrait and something different for me to draw 💕 It was lovely to draw her with such a specific memory in mind. I used three different reference photos for her portrait as my favourite photo of her face was a photo where she was soaking wet so her ears were drenched and her fur was no where near a fluffy as she is. I thought I’d show you something that happens but isn’t always shown, especially on social media as a lot of content is showing only the good bits and the perfect life or work. But it’s not always like that in reality. Mistakes and mess happen. When working on Stanley I really wasn’t happy with how his eyes looked, I had lightened them a bit as in the reference photos his eyes were very black, but the reflections to me just looked odd. So I used one of the other reference photos I had of him to redraw his eyes. Lilly Another of my Christmas commissions that I can finally share with you. This was a tricky piece as I used three different reference photos put together to create it. My client bought this commission as a gift for his brother and sister in law, he wanted Lilly to be wearing the flower decorations that she wore for their wedding day. This is Calcifer or Cal for short, he is an 8 year old lab/staffy cross who originally came all the way from California! Cal is a very shy and loving boy. He is the most loyal dog once you are in his circle of trust. Ozzy was one of my first commissions back in February 2021 and my first black dog, (I love drawing black dogs). I had only just started my business and only just bought my first pan pastels so I was very unfamiliar with them, I also wasn’t aware or pastelmat yet so this was drawn on pastel paper. I love Ozzy’s portrait still but as a lot of things do in life, my art has progressed, my skills have refined and developed since drawing him. Chester is a springer spaniel I drew in November for a client for Christmas, he was part of a duo piece which is now my absolute favourite work to date (though there are other close contenders for this position 🥰) check out the full artwork on my reel I posted yesterday if you missed it. With art you grow with each piece you do and learn from each piece too, with Chester I was worried about those spaniel ears, that can be notoriously tricky to do, and I surprised myself how I didn’t struggle with them as much as I would have done even a year ago. I now embrace the fact my art will change with time and I am excited to challenge myself with different breeds that may bring up new elements I have yet to tackle. Remember that art is a journey and it will evolve and change as you travel through it. One of the first things I noticed about Lara is the she flips her left ear inside out (if that makes any sense), almost all of her reference photos it was like this. I did ask my client if she wanted the ear left like that or I could match it to her other one, I am so glad she chose to keep it like this as I think it is part of her charm. Ok so as usual, this time of year I have fallen off of social media as I have been bogged down with actually creating, drawing Christmas commissions, dealing with multiple cases of flu in my household, school, nursery, a 7 month old and not to mention actually doing Christmas for the family, needless to say I have been very busy. I don’t know why I like doing these videos but I just do. Looking at art from different angles and not just straight on is important, when I go to art galleries like Tate modern you see the work before you SEE the work if that makes sense. As you walk up to the art, get closer and then finally line up with it and see it square on it all changes and comes together. This commission was gifted today to a son-in-law for his birthday. Sadly 3 days after the photo we used as reference was taken Jet was stolen off of his farm.
